De Maleisische overheid claimt ten onrechte dat Maleisische palmolie duurzaam is. Dat zeggen Milieudefensie en haar internationale koepelorganisatie Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) in dit rapport.

Fuelling destruction in Latin America - the real price of the drive for agrofuels

Dit rapport beschrijft de werkelijke kosten van biobrandstoffenproductie in Latijns Amerika, zoals ontbossing, verlies aan biodiversiteit, slechte werkomstandigheden en conflicten om landgebruik.

Oliemaatschappijen willen geen openheid geven over de biobrandstoffen die zij bijmengen bij benzine en diesel. Hierdoor valt onmogelijk te controleren of niet-duurzame biobrandstoffen, zoals palmolie en soja-olie, worden bijgemengd.

Extracting the truth

Oliebedrijven kunnen de uitstoot van broeikasgas in de vervoersketen vanaf de bron tot aan de brandstof voor de auto (well to wheel) met tenminste 10 procent terugbrengen zonder de inzet van biobrandstoffen. Dat staat in het rapport 'Extracting the truth: Oil industry efforts to undermine the Fuel Quality Directive'.

Palmoliebusiness nekt het regenwoud.

In 2000, Greenpeace Netherlands and Milieudefensie requested Dutch banks to apply sustainability criteria when financial services are provided to the Indonesian oil palm sub-sector. The banks appear to support this concept but some state that they have since long applied environmental criteria to their investment decisions. The NGOs are still concerned that these banks may not fully acknowledge the environmental and social impacts of their investments in Indonesia's plantation business. Testcase: PT Matrasawit.

Zowel de ING Groep als de ABN Amro Groep zijn de afgelopen vijf jaar op veel verschillende manieren betrokken geweest bij het direct of indirect financieren van oliepalmplantage-conglomeraten in Indonesi‘. Dit blijkt overduidelijk uit het verzamelde materiaal in dit rapport. Bovendien duidt niets er op dat een van beide banken recentelijk een terughoudender beleid is gaan voeren. Ook dit jaar nog zijn de beide banken verschillende nieuwe financieringsrelaties met oliepalm-groepen aangegaan, of hebben zij bestaande relaties vernieuwd.
