19 January 2011. This report by Brandt outlines the nature of oil sands extraction and upgrading processes, with an
emphasis on factors affecting energy consumption. Next, it compares a variety of recent
estimates of GHG emissions from oil sands, and outlines reasons for variation between
estimates. Lastly, it outlines low, high and “most likely” estimates of GHG emissions from
oil sands, given results from previously produced estimates, and compare these emissions
to those of conventional fuels. This report focuses on the European context, and therefore
uses EU-specific emissions factors for transport and refining of fuels.

January 2011. The situation in the Niger Delta is a disaster for nature and area residents. Oil leaks regularly pollute the fields, forests and water. These leaks place a heavy burden on
agriculture and fishing in this overpopulated region. The cause of many of the leaks is
unclear, as is the quality of the clean-up operations and the consequences of the oil
infrastructure to the environment. Figures are unreliable and the government provides

2010. RIVM revised the models for the calculation of consumer risk for pesticide residues at the maximum
allowed levels in food; the actual levels are generally lower. The reason for the revision were more
recent food consumption data for young children. For a risk assessment, the amount of a food product
consumed is combined with the pesticide concentration in or on that product. The resulting pesticide
intake is compared to a toxicological reference value. This risk assessment is a default part of the
pesticide authorisation procedure.
